Massive recovery programme taking shape in China after the Sichuan Earthquake
Six months ago on 12 May 2008, a massive earthquake devastated south-western China, killing more than 80,000 and displacing nearly 15 million people. The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), as well as the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies around the world have since implemented an enormous humanitarian relief effort.

Psychosocial support in Myanmar after Cyclone Nargis
Myanmar was hit by Cyclone Nargis on 2 and 3 May, 2008. The extreme wind was exacerbated by a 12- foot storm surge, and as a result, 130,000 men, women and children lost their lives and nearly 20,000 were injured. Psychosocial support was immediately recognised as a priority.

Philippines Red Cross responding to South Leyte landslides
A period of heavy rainfalls triggered a landslide in the southern part of the Philippine island Leyte on 17 February 2006. At the time of the landslide, the Disaster Response Team was immediately called for. The deployment included two social workers and one welfare aid that were also responsible for the delivery of psychosocial support. The social workers and the welfare aid were trained in Community-based psychological Support, standard first aid and disaster management.

Supporting safe environments in Sri Lanka free of violence against children
Violence against children is a silent global disaster. The Sri Lankan Red Cross (SLRCS) in partnership with Canadian Red Cross (CRC) has organized consultations to assess the need for prevention programs and how to best develop them with local communities. After feedback from children, parents and over 70 child protection agencies including government, local and international organizations, the development of a long-term agenda to support child protection through prevention programs, awareness through media and rigorous evaluation have been established.

School-based psychosocial support after Yogyakarta Earthquake
An earthquake struck near the city of Yogyakarta, Saturday 27 May 2006, causing extreme and widespread destruction. A psychosocial support programme was set up to provide support to communities in districts severely affected by the earthquake through Indonesian Red Cross volunteers (Palang Merah Indonesia/PMI).

Support to Earthquake Survivors
On 8 October 2005 a powerful earthquake shook northern Pakistan and northern India. More than 79,000 people died, 73,000 were injured. The Danish Red Cross (DRC) and the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) initiated a psychosocial programme to help the victims.
